Der Allgemeine Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund (ADGB) beauftragte im Frühjahr 1928 den Architekten Hannes Meyer mit dem Bau eines Schulungsorts der Gewerkschaften – der Gebäudekomplex gilt als Musterbeispiel moderner Baukultur. Die Ausstellung in einem der Lehrerhäuser der Bundesschule – dem heutigen Sitz des baudenkmal bundesschule bernau e. V. – widmet sich der wechselhaften Nutzungsgeschichte, den damit einhergehenden baulichen Veränderungen und dem Leben, das in der Ausbildungsstätte stattgefunden hat und stattfindet. Durch Artefakte, Zeitdokumente, Erzählungen von Bürger*innen und Expert*innen sowie einer weiterführenden Bibliothek wird ein Zeitraum von fast 100 Jahren, von der Grundsteinlegung 1928 bis heute, veranschaulicht und begreifbar gemacht.
Die Ausstellung „Schule im Walde“ – 1928 bis heute im Lehrerhaus Hannes-Meyer-Campus 9 ist bis zur Fertigstellung des Besucherzentrums nun für Besucher des UNESCO-Welterbes Anlaufstelle. Sie ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt des baudenkmal bundesschule bernau e. V., der BeSt und der Stadt Bernau bei Berlin.

“School in the woods“ – 1928 to present day

In spring 1928 the Free Trade Union of Professional and Industrial Associations (Allgemeine Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund; ADGB) commissioned the architect and Bauhaus Director Hannes Meyer to construct an educational institution for the Free Trade Union. Today, the building complex is a model for modern architecture due to its harmonic adaptation within the landscape, its spacious architectural lighting, as well as its ideal combination of ideas regarding socio-educational reform. Not least because of these criteria, the former school of the Free Trade Union received the title of UNESCO world heritage.
The exhibition “School in the woods“ – 1928 to present day, at the headquarters of the association baudenkmal bundesschule bernau e. V., the former teachers' house, addresses the eventful history of the building – looking at its usage, structural changes, as well as daily life on campus. This includes the construction of the school by the legendary Bauhaus School in Dessau for the Free Trade Union (ADGB), the occupation of the school by storm troopers (SA) of the national socialists and the following function as an SS leadership school (Reichsführerschule) until 1945. Further, it focusses on the subsequent use of the building as a trade union school in the German Democratic Republic (GDR)and the following vacancy until its successful reconstruction and use nowadays as a boarding school by the Chamber of Crafts (Handwerkskammer) of Berlin.
Exhibition elements which were developed and used by the baudenkmal bundesschule bernau e. V. in the 1990s form the basis of the exhibition. They are combined with elements from the exhibition “Necessities, not luxuries – Bernau and its Bauhaus“ which was shown at the Galerie Bernau in 2019 and have been adapted to the rooms of the teachers' house. Through stories told by Bernau residents and experts, as well as artifacts, historic documents and a specifically created library a time period of over 90 years, from the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone in 1928 to the present day, is made tangible and accessible.
The exhibition “School in the woods“ – 1928 to present day” in the teachers' house at the Hannes-Meyer-Campus 9 is the central contact point for visitors of the UNESCO world heritage site until the completion of the new visitor center. It is a cooperation between baudenkmal bundesschule bernau e. V., BeSt Bernauer Stadtmarketing GmbH and the city of Bernau bei Berlin.
