Gözlem/Beobachtung ist eine Ausstellung die von fünf Künstler:innen realisiert wurde, die sich im Herbst 2011 in Istanbul trafen: Selin Bourquin (Schweiz), Samuel Burkhardt, Julia Herfurth und Christian Klier (Deutschland) und Ulrich Fohler (Österreich). Die Basis der Ausstellung fußt auf zwei Konzepten: Kaufen und Leihen. Die Ausstellung zeigt drei Werkgruppen mit den Titeln: “1 Lira – 100 Kuruş”, “Permanent – Collection from Moda Cad. and Dr. Esat Işık Cad.” und “Mexico 66 – Copy of the Copy.” Sezgi Abalı
1 Lira – 100 Kuruş Eine Lira sind 100 Kuruş. Ein Kuruş ist die kleinste Münze, die es in der türkischen Währung gibt. Es gibt sie zwar, aber es ist unüblich, sie zu nutzen. Wir haben sie gefunden, um sie wieder in Umlauf zu bringen, um herauszufinden, was sie wert ist. Einige Waren, die wir gekauft haben, entsprechen genau dem Wert eines Kuruş, andere sind weniger wert, wieder andere mehr. Diese Arbeit hing im Wesentlichen von der Offenheit und dem Interesse der Menschen an unserem Projekt und ihrer Großzügigkeit ab. Die Dinge, die wir gekauft haben, repräsentieren die unendliche Vielfalt der in Istanbul verfügbaren Waren.
Mexico 66 – Copy of the Copy Wir kauften ein Paar Turnschuhe der Marke Onitsuka Tiger und eine billige chinesische Kopie des gleichen Modells. Die Kopie diente als Vorlage für einen türkischen Schuhmacher, den wir gebeten haben, ein Replik des Sneakers für uns anzufertigen. Wie viel ist also jeder einzelne von ihnen wert?
Permanent - Collection from Moda Cad. and Dr. Esat Işık Cad. Wir haben etwa 60 Atatürk-Porträts in den Geschäften und Restaurants in den Straßen Moda Cad. und Dr. Esat Işık Cad. gesammelt. Wir haben sie für die Zeit der Ausstellung ausgeliehen. Sie spiegeln die verschiedenen Versionen der Atatürk-Porträts und seine unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsbilder wider. Außerdem sind sie ein Auszug aus der permanenten Sammlung von Atatürk-Porträts, die in dieser Gegend existiert.

Gözlem/Observation is an exhibition realized by five artists Selin Bourquin (Switzerland), Samuel Burkhardt, Julia Herfurth, Christian Klier (Germany) and Ulrich Fohler (Austria) who met in Istanbul in Fall 2011. The discovery of the “ungraspable” matrix of life- systems, certain values, social structures, speed of life, fluctuation, quick glances on the market situation, economic diversity, buzzingly-detailed market life, gorgeously personal exchange/consumption stories and friendly people revealed an interesting playground.
The structural idea of the exhibition stands on two concepts: “Borrowing “ and “Buying” which are respectively used on social basis and market situation. The exhibition showcases three groups of works entitled“1 Lira - 100 Kuruş”, “Mexico 66 - Copy of the copy”, and “Permanent - Collection from Moda Cad. and Dr. Esat Işık Cad.” Sezgi Abalı
1 Lira – 100 Kuruş One lira is one hundred kuruş. One kuruş is the smallest coin there is in Turkish currency. It is there but it is not in common use. We found it to put it back into circulation, to find out what it is worth. Some goods we bought reflect the exact value of one kuruş, others are worth less, others more. This work basically depended on peoples openness and interest into our project and their generosity. The things we bought represent the infinite variety of goods available in Istanbul.
Mexico 66 – Copy of the Copy We bought a pair of Onitsuka Tiger sneakers and a cheap Chinese copy of the same model. The copy served as a model for a Turkish shoemaker who we asked to make a replica of the sneaker for us. So how much is every one of them worth?
Permanent - Collection from Moda Cad. and Dr. Esat Işık Cad. We collected about 60 Ataturk portraits in the shops and restaurants on Moda Cad. and Dr. Esat Işık Cad.. We borrowed them for the time of the exhibition. They reflect the different versions of Ataturk portraits and his varying appearances. Further they are an extract of the permanent collection of Atatürk portraits existing in this area.
